Some look at me. Study my style.
But never think that fashion is my passion
I aspire to have my own clothing store,
where nobody is excluded.
where all fashion styles are included.
I love crocheting and fashion. But I am reserved about sharing this. When people ask me what I do in my free time, I just say “I love doing arts and crafts”. I have been embarrassed to say that I crochet because some might say this craft is “for the grandmas”. Yet, crochet is for everyone!
My love for crocheting and fashion began when I was 8 years old and was inspired by my grandma while she was visiting from Puerto Rico. She taught me the basics and that the first step of crocheting was making the loops. My grandma loves that I crochet like her. She often sends me yarn and her own creations, which she sells in her shop in Puerto Rico.
I began crocheting more regularly when I turned 11 years old. I watched YouTube videos to help my crocheting skills. I began making small crocheting creations like headbands, scarves, and then shoulder bags. These smaller creations normally take between 20 – 35 minutes, depending on how fast I work or if I take breaks. Now that I am more experienced with crochet stitches and feel more confident, I have taken on more intricate and bigger projects such as making sweaters, plushies, beanies, and more! One project that I am quite proud of is the sweater vest I made. These creations often take an hour or more to complete if I work nonstop.
Through crocheting, I have learned a lot about myself. I have learned that I have to work on my patience. Stitching and looping seemed hard at first but, with practice, I was able to get the hang of it. I have also learned that crocheting as a hobby actually relaxes me. In addition, I can sell my handmade creations and make a profit like I have seen other people do. Even though I do not sell my creations now, I would like to in the future. I can also save money because crochet clothes are expensive.
Crocheting is about patience. Sometimes I will start making something but may not come back to it for a week or even a couple of months later. The most challenging thing about crocheting is measuring and keeping count of the stitches. But the end product is so rewarding! My grandma’s gift of introducing me to the world of crocheting has fueled my dream to make clothing that can be worn in everyday life and to make art that people will remember.
