From December 27th to January 3rd, Adonis V., Alessandra B., Nellie B., and I, along with a diverse group of students from other Outward Bound schools across the United States, spent time in the Florida Everglades Ten Thousand Islands as part of the Outward Bound Winter Expedition. This was an extraordinary journey that redefined my senior year, how I view myself, and how I view nature. At one point, I had doubts about going ahead with the application process for this trip. But, I’m glad I overcame my fears and concerns about leaving the familiar comforts of home and being away from my family. It didn’t prevent me from having this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The trip provided a rewarding opportunity for physical activity, collaboration, and hard work to reach each destination. Each day presented challenges that tested both my physical and mental limits. We gained hands-on experience in canoeing, starting by placing ourselves in the water with our canoes, guiding both ourselves and our partners, and setting up camp. Over 8 days, I felt accomplished when meeting each challenge and learning new skills while traveling through the Gulf of Mexico, setting up tents on its beaches, and sleeping under the stars. Navigating different islands, we formed strong bonds, creating a close-knit community despite having met only a few days prior. As we entered the 2024 New Year, we did so with lasting connections and smiles, fully embracing every moment.
One of the most memorable experiences from this trip was reaching the end of the course and enjoying s’mores on an island along the Gulf of Mexico. Another unforgettable moment was camping under the vast expansive night sky–far from the city lights and our campfire stories echoed in the stillness of the Everglades. It was a moment of connection with both nature and my new friends, a bond from a shared experience.
As I returned to school, I carried many lessons learned from the Everglades back with me– lessons of discipline, self-reliance, leadership, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for nature. The Outward Bound Winter Everglades Expedition was more than an adventure and an escape. It was a learning experience that went beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom. The trip showed me how resilient I am and reminded me of the importance of being open to and welcoming new horizons. One piece of advice that I will give to a student going on this trip is to have a positive mindset. Be courageous and open to new experiences!
