The Black History Month Showcase at BCS on Thursday, February 29th, was a powerful celebration of black creativity and heritage. Held in the BCS Cafeteria from 4:00 to 6:15 p.m., the event featured a variety of student performancers—drummers, poets, rappers, singers, dancers, the LadyWolves cheerleading squad, and much more!
Programmed and directed by the YWCA and Inspiring Minds After School Program directors Ashley and Danielle, the showcase was designed to express the rich representation of African American culture.
In an exclusive interview with Ashley, the Community School Director of the Inspiring Minds After School Program for BCS Upper Grades, she highlighted the importance of learning about black history. Ashley emphasized that understanding black history helps individuals comprehend the experiences and contributions of black people throughout history.
When asked about the purpose of the Black History Showcase at BCS, Ashley explained that it aimed to “educate and inspire all students while showcasing black students and celebrating their heritage and identity.” She emphasized the significance of the showcase in “acknowledging our resilience and resistance against oppression, slavery, and systemic racism.”
Reflecting on the most important aspect of black history, Ashley stressed “acknowleding those that came before us and those that we are paving the way for and who will come after us.” She added recognizing our [of black] resilience and resistance against oppresion, slavey, and systematic racism.”
In response to how learning about black history changed her perspective on the world, Ashley shared that it taught her about the richness and diversity of her culture. She expressed that is her “job to help students develop a deeper understanding of who they are, to develop appreciation for diversity and inclusion in all aspects of society, and to help students develop their own understanding of what it means to be black”.
The Black History Month Showcase personally gave me the opportunity to learn about my history, bring awareness of black culture at BCS, and show the beauty and unity within black culture.
Overall, the Black History Month Showcase left a lasting impact on all who attended. It served as a reminder of the importance of celebrating diversity and fostering understanding within the BCS community.
