Black History Month is celebrated in February, recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. How will we celebrate this major Black holiday that is right around the corner? Black History Month holds an extreme amount of significance because it is a month for African Americans to be appreciated and given the spotlight for our wonderful contributions to America. What we contribute to America has been overshadowed by White America for decades, so this month is our time to receive the recognition we deserve! Even closer than February, we have a major Black holiday coming up on Monday, January 18. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place on the third Monday of January each year, honoring King’s birthday on January 15.
Dr. King’s holiday is important to me because without his protests and involvement in the American Civil Rights Movement, our world would not look the way it does today. He organized many peaceful protests, including the famous March on Washington, as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Without his courageous acts, we would still be living in a segregated country where Black people are kept under the thumb of the White majority.
In order to recognize the holiday and honor Dr. King annually, BCS should create new BCS T-shirts that include designs by African American student artists and a slogan that highlights Black history. Then, every year for Black History Month, students can wear the shirts to school on a specific day or send in pictures of them wearing the shirts to show pride and spirit.
