On Wednesday, March 27th, nearly 30 other juniors and I who identify as males of color participated in the EAF All Male College Fair at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). From 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., we took part in an experience that left a powerful impact.
As an African American student, attending the All Male College Fair was both uplifting and comforting. I immediately felt a sense of togetherness and belonging, surrounded by other males of color of similar backgrounds interested in exploring college options.
From the moment I walked in to the College Fair, there was a sense of excitement. I was greeted by a friendly staff member who asked if I needed any help. Everyone was eager to support us and make us feel welcomed. As I made my way through the fair, visiting each table, I conversed with college representatives who emphasized their commitment to diversity.
One of the most inspiring aspects of the fair was the chance to speak with representatives from various colleges and universities who showed real interest in hearing our stories and understanding our unique perspectives—-as students of color who still face challenges in getting into college and challenges of feeling like we belong. I often see on the internet college students of color speaking about the struggles with issues of belonging and representation that they face in being at predominantly white schools.
Overall, my experience at the All Male Junior College Fair was a positive. It was a powerful reminder that there are colleges and universities out there that genuinely care about students like me, value our voices and experiences, and are actively working to break down barriers to access and success.
