During junior year, BCS students have the opportunity to earn credit for Work-Based Learning & Experiences. On Monday and Wednesday’s afternoons students are assigned to one of our partner organizations such as the Brooklyn Public Library, the Prospect Park Zoo, the Law Firm of Bryan Cave, Anna Sui Fashions, and others. The internship culminates with the supervisors evaluating the intern’s work performance at our annual BCS Model Job Fair as interns represent their organizations and conduct mock interviews with their 9th &10th grade classmates.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” You must believe that you are beautiful in all ways possible to accomplish the beauty you dream of. My name is Stiven and I am an intern at Salon Bohemia in Brooklyn. I was not sure what to expect because working with hair was not something I was considering for the future. My supervisor is Wendy Smith, she is a very strict, respectful, joyful, and talented person. Wendy is also passionate and she transmits that passion through her work, making clients, stylists and myself comfortable. Some of my responsibilities are welcoming and greeting clients to the salon, offering drinks, washing tools and equipment, mixing hair colors and cleaning around the salon. In the beginning, it felt like a routine, but soon after I got used to the names of products, ways to organize the products, and how the salon works. After I was there for a couple of weeks, my supervisor allowed me to use the mannequin, style and cut their hair. It might sound easy, but if you are not passionate about it, it is challenging. When styling hair you must be open-minded and have a lot of patience because it is not easy, it doesn’t always come out the way you would like it too. This internship has been an experience that I would never forget and it has helped me organize my mindset about my future career choices. I believe that this experience has helped me develop a deeper understanding of how a business is run and managed. By Stiven Vasquez
During my 7th grade I was part of the Global Voices Club. There, Magen Rodriguez introduced us to Paws for a Cause, an event that helps give back to the community. I noticed how much I love giving back to animals that need help. Based on this experience, I knew I wanted to do something similar for my internship and that is why I chose to do an internship at NYC Pets. The purpose of this organization is to help the cats find a forever home. At NYC Pets I learned where some of the pets come from and how to take care of them. I also learned how the organization For Animals helps the street cats who keep repopulating. My supervisor Emily Davis introduced me to other internships such as veterinarians, helping me meet new connections. NYC Pets lead me to a path where I would like to grow in the future.
