On January 24th, 2020 the world lost an icon. Basketball player, Kobe Bryant, and his daughter and other 7 people were killed in a helicopter crash. They were headed to one of Gigi’s practice games where Bryant was set to coach.
People all over the world brought out their Lakers gear in remembrance of the legend. I dug around in my room in search of my purple and yellow rubber band bracelet that I created at the age of 10 for the team. Even here in BCS, each crew participated in a circle created to honor him. Bryant was a voice for the black community. “He was an advocate for victims of police violence and donated money to widows’ and children’s funds for cops killed in the line of duty”. He and his wife Vanessa created The Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation to encourage young people to stay active through sports (The Guardian, 2020).
Bryant was and is loved by many, even if you are not a basketball fan. He practiced and believed in the core values we have here at BCS and worked hard until his last game in April 2016. Let us not forget who he was, and what he did for so many people. No matter what you do, work hard, help others, and spread nothing but positivity. After all, it is what he would have wanted.
